Doggie Vacation this week

Rufus is enjoying a nice visit at my parents-in-law house this week.  The house seems so quiet without him!  But maybe this will give me time to repair the blinds that he recently mangled.

Rufus Knocks Over Camera

Here is another video of Rufus misbehaving in the kitchen.  This clip wasn't seen on the Animal Planet show "Bad Dog!" but it's a gem.  It's almost as if he knows what to look for and how to keep his naughty actions a secret.  I guess I should just be glad that he didn't eat the camera.  Anwyay, enjoy watching it!

Rufus vs Kitchen Island Cabinet

We soon learned that Rufus is a smart, strong, and determined dog.  He knows what he wants and doesn't give up.  Just watch this video of him opening the cabinet where we used to keep the trash.  Even with a piece of rope tying the knobs together, he muscles his way into the space.
This was the first video I took just to try and figure out how he was getting into everything.  I've since caught him opening the dishwasher, oven, microwave, and all manner of cabinets.  He even learned to twist and pull open a doorknob.  There was just no stopping him.

Rufus' First Day Home

After settling in to our house outside Portland, Oregon, we decided to get a dog.  We knew we wanted to rescue a dog and the Humane Society was at the top of our list.  So on a cold autumn weekend afternoon, we drove 40 minutes to the Oregon Humane Society shelter near the Portland Airport.  We walked through the 4 color coded kennel wings trying to find a dog with a good temperament that was old enough to be past the puppy stage.  Many dogs were barking, some were jumping off the walls, and others were just lying down.  We finally settled on meeting 3 dogs in the outdoor play area to see how they would interact with us.

The first dog was just not that interested in us and was more just happy to be outside than anything else.
A second dog was a leonberger mix and was really, really big.  He showed us some attention, but didn't really listen to us when we tried to call him over or play with him.
The third dog was a chow-labrador mix named "Rusty".  In his kennel he was laying peacefully, all curled up on a scrap of blanket that was in his cage.  Outside, he was engaging and happy and a good listener.  Rachel threw a ball, and he fetched it and dropped it right at her feet.  He came when he was called and even could sit on command.  This was the dog for us!  So we signed the papers, took him home, and changed his name to Rufus.

Here is Rufus his first day with us playing with a ball we bought at PetSmart just hours earlier during the car ride back home.
